Fallen firefighter got start in Monterey County

The Monterey County Fire community is among those remembering 33-year-old Brian Hughes, a firefighter who died fighting the Ferguson Fire.

According to Cahagua Fire, Hughes got his start right here in Monterey County and several of their members knew and worked with him. He worked with the Monterey Handcrew.

Originally from Hawaii, Hughes had been with California’s Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots for four years and reached the rank of captain.

He is survived by his parents, sister, and fiancee who is 3 months pregnant with their first child, as well as their 2 dogs Zephyr and Taco.

A GoFundMe has been created to help with various costs, including those for Hughes’ unborn child.

All donations will be given directly to his fiancee Paige and their unborn child to help with anything they might need in their future.
