Animal-free circus comes to Capitola

A big night for one Central Coast city. Circus Vargas opened in Capitola to a great turnout.

Thursday’s open kicked off a five day run for Circus Vargas. They haven’t been in the Santa Cruz area for 28 years, this time marks their first time in Capitola.

Circus Vargas has taken over the Capitola Mall parking lot. The show’s theme is “Dreaming of Pirates”.

It features plenty of action, including motorcycles and of course flying trapeze and jugglers.

One thing that used to be a staple at circuses is missing at this show and it’s something Circus Vargas prides itself on.

“We do not have animals at Circus Vargas,” said Katya Quiroga, executive vice president and artistic director, “[We’ve] been animal-free for almost a decade already.”

Circus Vargas welcomed two local charities. Jacob’s Heart and CASA helped them celebrate their opening night.

The shows are happening through Monday in the Capitola parking lot.
