Car Week to benefit multiple local charities

Car Week officially starts on Friday, August 17.

“I love that you can walk down the city street here and you can see Lamborghinis and Ferraris,” said Candace Grant, a Pacific Grove resident.

“I love classic cars so I’m really, really excited about that,” said Tessa Gorski, a Seaside resident.

Local leaders are furiously working away to make sure things go smoothly.

“We want to make sure that we’re getting as much information out as possible as early as possible,” said Tammy Blount-Canavan, the CEO of the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The bureau released a guide on Thursday for navigating Car Week, detailing each of the days’ events including locations, times, and road closures. And there will be plenty of road closures to prepare for.

These include Alvarado Street and Del Monte Avenue in Monterey, Ocean Avenue and Dolores Street in Carmel, as well as Lighthouse Avenue in Pacific Grove closed on certain days.

“Well I think just making sure everyone is informed correctly is very helpful. The booklet that the MCCVB is coming out with I think is going to help everyone around this including the organizers as well as the community,” said April Morris, a representative with The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering.

According to the visitors bureau, Car Week brings in about 85,000 visitors to the area each year. Those visitors in turn put out over $50 million in local spending, generating about $5 million in taxes. Beneath all the exotic and priceless automotive gems Car Week offers, there is a deeper meaning to it all.

“Also understand the important impact that Car Week has for our local charities, for students, for our local community that benefits so much not just from the economic impact of the events themselves, but from the charities that benefit from those events,” said Blount-Canavan.

In 2017, the Concours d’Elegance raised nearly $2 million for charity. THe Concorso Italiano also donated $20,000 to several Monterey Peninsula schools and youth organizations.
