UPDATE: Woman shot in car in Santa Cruz, 16-year-old boy in custody

An argument led to a woman being shot in her car in Santa Cruz and now a teen is in custody.

According to Santa Cruz Police, the shooting took place at River and Fern Street around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

SCPD told KION four people were driving in a blue Toyota Prius when they started arguing with people in another car. Shots were fired from the Prius and a woman in the other car was hit in the leg.

Officers drove up Highway 9 and found the Toyota and the suspects.

Santa Cruz Police said a 16-year-old boy was taken into custody for assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm at a moving vehicle, and a minor in possession of a firearm. The teen was taken to Juvenile Hall.

A passenger in the suspect vehicle was also arrested for an outstanding warrant unrelated to this case.

The woman hit by a bullet, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Highway 9 is back open.
