Sex offender arrested for failure to register
Hollister police arrested a transient Tuesday for failing to register as a sex offender.
Anthony Lewis, 48, is charged with failing to register within five days of being released from jail.
Police say Lewis, a convicted sex offender, had been released earlier this month from San Benito County Jail on a previous warrant. Under state law, he was required to register as a sex offender within five days of his release.
He was taken into custody at around 3:46 a.m. July 17, for causing a disturbance and refusing to leave the Quikstop store at 10 San Felipe Road. Police determined he had failed to register as a sex offender within the required five day period.
Convicted sex offenders must register their home address every year within five days of their birth date. Those who are transients must register every 30 days, and within five days of moving into a new city or county. Prior to his arrest in Hollister, Lewis had been a transient in Monterey County.
Hollister police made a similar arrest of a transient on July 4, when officers arrested Shaun Allen Heflin, 29, on a warrant for rape and other charges.
