Passenger killed in small plane crash near Tahoe identified
UPDATE: 7/19/2018 1:38 p.m. The passenger who died in a small airplane crash that also killed the pilot near Lake Tahoe earlier this week has been identified as a 55-year-old Southern California man.
The Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office said Thursday an autopsy determined Peter Jackson of West Hollywood died from multiple blunt force injuries in the crash south of Truckee, California.
The 60-year-old pilot, Kenneth Whittall-Scherfee of Carmichael, California, reported engine trouble shortly after takeoff on Tuesday and was trying to make it back to the Truckee-Tahoe Airport when the plane went down.
Jackson and another male passenger who hasn’t been identified were flown to a Reno hospital with critical injuries. Jackson died later that day. The three men were the only ones on board the plane.
The Federal Aviation Administration is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.

7/17/2018 4:18 p.m. Authorities have identified the 60-year-old pilot from suburban Sacramento who died in a small airplane crash near Lake Tahoe.
The Placer County sheriff says Kenneth Whittall-Scherfee of Carmichael was killed in Tuesday morning’s crash south of Truckee that also claimed the life of one passenger and critically injured another.
The sheriff’s office says Whittall-Scherfee also owned the single-engine plane that went down about 7:40 a.m. along State Route 267 near the Northstar ski resort.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the pilot reported engine trouble shortly after takeoff and was trying to return to the Truckee-Tahoe Airport when the crash occurred.
The names of the two passengers have not been released.
UPDATE: 7/17/2018 12:08 p.m. A second person has died from injuries suffered in a small plane crash near Lake Tahoe.
The pilot was declared dead at the scene of the crash Tuesday morning south of Truckee, California.
The two male passengers on board were flown to a Reno hospital with critical injuries. The Placer County sheriff’s office says one of them later died.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the pilot reported engine trouble shortly after takeoff and was trying to return to the Truckee-Tahoe Airport about 7:40 a.m. when it went down about a mile from the airport near the Northstar ski resort along State Route 267.
Gregor says the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office says one person is dead and two others are injured after a single-engine plane crash near Truckee Tuesday morning.
The FAA says the single-engine Navion-B crashed on the west side of Highway 267 near Mercer Flats shortly before 7:40 a.m. Tuesday.
A Truckee-Tahoe Airport spokesperson tells us the plane was heading east when the incident occurred.
Authorities say the pilot reported engine problems and was trying to return to Truckee-Tahoe Airport when the crash occurred.
Authorities say, Care Flight, Truckee Fire, and local law enforcement are also on scene.
The FAA and NTSB will investigate.
