Suspicious device at Monterey Peninsula College determined not to be explosive

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office responded to a possible pipe bomb at a school in Monterey.

A member of the bomb squad told KION there were reports of a pipe bomb strapped to a tree at Monterey Peninsula College.

The Monterey Police Department confirmed that a worker found a suspicious device near a child development center. Kids inside the center were evacuated to a cafeteria.

Officers and Monterey Fire were on scene at the upper parking lot of MPC.

Around 4 p.m. the Monterey Police Department said the possible destructive device was rendered safe by Monterey County Bomb Squad. The device was determined not to be explosive.

The bomb squad just left Natividad where there was a bomb threat made towards the Salinas hospital Wednesday afternoon. Staff and patients were evacuated from the building. The hospital was cleared of any threat before 3 p.m.
