Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca gets Indycar racing back
It was a huge day for race fans on the Central Coast as our local track made a big announcement Tuesday.
Race fans already have so much to look forward to every year, but in 2019, they’ll be getting Indycar back.
Now imagine a loud race car sound times 40-something, and it’s like you’ll be at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca in just over a year. Tuesday, the world-famous raceway announced that Indycar will be back in September of 2019.
“This place, as Bobby said, is one of the special places in all the world. It’s an iconic track, It’s revered by so many people from overseas, so many drivers, and it’s great to have Indycar back,” said former racer Danny Sullivan.
“To bring Indycar to the equation is just the cherry on top and we’re happy to be a part of it,” said racer and Weathertech Representative Cooper MacNeil.
“Our relationship with Indy has just begin again, and it’s starting off on a wonderful path,” said Monterey County Assistant County Administrative Officer Dewayne Woods.
Indycar racing has been absent from Laguna Seca for 14 years now, and when it returns next year, it will be incredibly significant to the Indycar series.
“It’s not just that we’re coming back, but this will be the finale of the Indycar championship for the next three years,” said Indycar CEO Mark Miles.
Despite the 14-year absence, Indycar racing already has a legacy at Laguna Seca, and the organizers at the track today hope to bring that legacy back in full force.
“Every week, I get asked the question, ‘When is Indycar racing coming back?’ And so I think that there has been that, even though there’s been a generational gap there, that Indycar has always been that ultimate series that people want to see,” said Senior Vice President of Events for Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca Gill Campbell.
As mentioned, fans of the open-wheel racing are going to have to wait a bit. The return of Indycar racing at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca is scheduled for September 22nd of 2019.
