Big rig fire closes Highway 101 south of Gilroy
UPDATE 7/8/2018 7:56 p.m.: Sunday afternoon a big rig caught fire on the Highway 101 bridge near State Route 25, South of Gilroy.
CHP says the fire, which started at approximately 3:36 p.m., spread to grass, trees, and the bridge.
That bridge is being checked for integrity.
CHP reports all lanes have reopened, as of 6:59 p.m.
Both southbound lanes of Highway 101 were being diverted to SR 25, with closures lasting for hours.
PREVIOUS STORY: The US 101 is shut down southbound to State Route 25 due to a car fire.
The fire may be spreading to the surrounding area.
It is suggested that drivers find an alternate route.
