Transient man arrested for arson in Watsonville

Watsonville Police arrested a transient man Saturday after he set a sleeping bag on fire.

The fire broke out around 11:30 a.m. at the 1400 block of Freedom Boulevard.

A witness called police after seeing the man set the fire.

The fire spread to a nearby grassy area, but an officer was able to extinguish it.

The witness provided a description that helped police find the suspect 10 to 15 minutes later behind a shopping center nearby.

The man was positively identified by the witness.

He is charged with arson and booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail.
