Two Central Coast teen cyclists make huge race
The Tour de France for those under 18 will begin soon in Europe, and a couple Central Coast kids will be representing the US!
We all know how big the Tour de France is. So you could probably consider the Tour of Ireland the warm-up to that race with the youngsters involved.
And these two young gentlemen, Alex Akins and Cameron Stewart, will be competing in the Tour of Ireland, traveling all the way to Europe from our beautiful Central Coast. The two were selected by USA Cycling to represent the western US in the Tour of Ireland and will fly out Saturday to begin their preparation and meet with the other members of their team that were selected from various western cities and states. The two-16-year-olds say they’re just starting to realize how big this is.
“But all of a sudden now it’s like within 24 hours I’m leaving, you know, and it’s like all of a sudden it’s here. And this is really exciting and nerve wracking,” said Alex Akins.
“So now I’m just like, every time I think about it I can’t help but smile. I’m like I’m going to Ireland to race. I’m like so excited,” said Cameron Stewart.
Alex and Cameron will compete for six days racing while in Ireland. Here on the Central Coast, they’re part of the Don Chapin Monterey Bay Junior Race Team which competes around the state. To get even more local, Alex just won 1st place in the 2018 Sea Otter Classic!
Now obviously it won’t be cheap to get out to Europe and enjoy the sights and sounds during their off time. They’ve started a gofundme page for their journey, so if you’d like to help out, head to this link:
