5,000 people expected to attend 17th annual Monterey Beer Festival this weekend

The 17th annual Monterey Beer Festival is happening this weekend at the Fairgrounds.

5,000 people from all over the state are expected to be there.

Event planners say the festival grows each year. Aside from the usual beer, food and live entertainment, this year they are bringing some new attractions.

“Our presenting sponsor is Big Sur Cana and Botanicals so they will be bringing information and some
giveaways and telling and educating us a little bit about the cannabis industry, there will be no samples, but it is a little confusing for the consumer now that it’s legal,” says the festival’s publicist Wendy Brickman.

Brickman says there is a growing beer culture in Monterey County, “what we’re seeing is the growth of it. People are discovering how wonderful beers are and how they can be crafted so we have breweries opening in Salinas and Monterey and some existing ones too and they’ll be here.”

Dozens of local and area breweries will be sampling their beers. Brickman says their participation in community events is helping grow the economy.

“They sponsor a lot of events, which really helps and they participate so they’re doing a lot of things I think. Alvarado brewery might be doing something with the Monterey library and I know Peter B’s is very active in the community, so they give back,” Brickman says.

The money raised from the event this weekend will not only get festival goers beer and food, it’s also going to a good cause.

Brickman says, “it is a fundraiser for the Monterey County Fair Heritage Foundation, which raises money for youth scholarships and raises money for capital improvements to keep the Monterey County Fairgrounds center 22 oak studded acres beautiful. And it is one of the most beautiful fairgrounds in the
nation.”

The event runs Saturday afternoon from 12:30 to 5:00.

Tickets are available online until Friday evening, they will also be available at the gate.
