Salinas family asking for help after losing everything in a house fire

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) UPDATE JUNE 9, 2022, at 5:47 p.m.-- The family who lost their home in Tuesday's house fire is trying to figure out their next steps.

“When the fire started, I was cooking, and I heard an explosion in my room,” said Jazmine Sedano. “I went to check, and my room was all on fire.”

Smoke spilled out of the home as firefighters worked to put it out. Sedano and her family lost everything in the fire.

“Everything was lost, My kid’s stuff, my wedding rings, my birth certificate,’ said Sedano. “Look, my father was in the mariachi, and his clothes from the mariachi got burned. My kids tell me, mom, let's go home already. But where do I take then?”

There's shattered glass and debris in front of the home. Sedano said they received help from the Red Cross. She and her family are staying with other relatives.

“We're staying for a while with family members, but we can't stay there a lot of nights,” said Sedano. “It's just the people that live on the contracts.” Sedano and her family lived at that home for five years and held many memories.

She told KION their home is where family members would get together for big occasions. She was even planning her son's birthday at their home.

Salinas Fire deemed the home a total loss. Sedano said there were eight adults and two kids living in the house. Sedano told KION that she believes the fire might have been started intentionally.

Salinas Fire says the cause is still under investigation. KION did reach out to the fire department for a follow-up and is working on a response.

The family set up a Go Fund Me to try and get back on their feet.
