Monterey Police remind Central Coast to keep fireworks out of city limits

As people across the Central Coast are getting ready for Fourth of July celebrations, one city is reminding everyone to leave the fireworks to the pros.

Though the city of Seaside is planning a big fireworks display, its neighbor Monterey Has strict rules –

“No fireworks whatsoever. Safe and sane, obviously no illegal fireworks, within the city limits in Monterey,” Lieutenant Marty Hart with the Monterey Police Department said.

Many longtime residents may remember when the laws were different, the city even hosted a fireworks display.

While police want everyone to enjoy the holiday, they say the rules are there for a reason.

“The ultimate reason is safety,” Lt. Hart said, “There’s a lot of accidents that happen with fireworks this time of year with children and property damage so the city direction was no more fireworks.”

Monterey Police are making sure everyone knows that, passing around fliers.

“We want people to enjoy the city of Monterey,” Lt. Hart said, “We want people to enjoy our beaches and all that we have to offer within this city. I would just stress while you enjoy it, don’t bring the fireworks in.

Instead, Monterey police are encouraging everyone to enjoy the show being offered in Seaside.

“It’s always better to go view a professional display where they’re trained to provide that aerial display of the fireworks that are beautiful to watch,” Lt. Hart said, “Just don’t bring your fireworks into Monterey.

If you are caught with fireworks in Monterey, they’ll be taken away and you could face a serious fine.
