Hidden bathroom camera found at Santa Cruz coffee shop
UPDATE 07/02/18 7:15PM The man suspected of hiding a camera in a coffee shop bathroom in Santa Cruz has been released on $100,000 bail.
The hidden camera was found inside a bathroom at a coffee shop in Santa Cruz.
According to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, an employee from Verve Coffee Roasters on 41st Avenue found the recording device in the restroom around 3 p.m on June 21.
The sheriff’s office responded and determined the video camera had been placed in the bathroom about three hours before it was found. “Detectives were able to obtain a surveillance image of the suspect leaving the facility and identified him in a few hours,” says Sgt. Brian Cleveland.
Detectives were able to identify the suspect as 35-year-old Sage Savage of Capitola.
Sgt. Cleveland said, “The recording device was pointed at the toilet and over a dozen videos of men, women, and children were captured on the device.”
Savage was not an employee at Verve.
On Friday (6/29), detectives served a search warrant at Savage’s home in the 800 block of 41st Avenue and found additional evidence linking him to the crime.
“Other recordings were found in Savage’s home depicting sex acts with women who may not know they were being recorded,” Sgt. Cleveland said.
The recording device used in the bathroom looked like a USB charging cable and was plugged into a wall outlet. Sgt. Cleveland says, “this one specifically is power driven so it was in an outlet, so obviously anybody using a public restroom, be aware of your surroundings, if there’s things plugged into the wall or things that have wires attached to them, just be vigilant.”
Savage was arrested for Sexual Exploitation of a Child, Burglary, and Using a Camcorder in a Restroom.
He has since been released from custody after posting his $100,000 bail.
Detectives are in the process of trying to locate additional victims who used the restroom on 6/21/18 between 12:30P.M. to 3:30 P.M. If you are a victim or have any additional information regarding this case, please contact either Detective Miyoshi at (831) 454-7642 or Detective Matson at (831) 454-7643.
