Watsonville neighbors helping neighbors in time of need
The Watsonville Police Department wants to add to its Post Incident Team (PIT) and needs residents help.
The team would include police and residents who would go to neighborhoods after traumatic events to calm fears and address concerns.
Whether a house fire or a violent crime, members of Watsonville police’s Post Incident Team provide care and comfort on what some consider the worst days of their lives.
“Anything that would send shockwaves across the community and basically it’s to offer services, information and try to inform residents of what has occurred in the community,” said Neighborhood Services Division Supervisor, Chris Miranda.
PIT members jobs include settling rumors and providing resources to whatever residents may need.
Jenni Veitch-Olson has been a PIT member for three and a half years and has responded to at least eight incidents throughout the city. She walked us through what a particular response might look like if members got a call. They would head to police headquarters for a briefing then deploy to the affected area with a cop in street clothes.
“A lot of times people are super grateful that we’re there and they appreciate knowing there are other neighbors who care about them and who are willing to reach out when there’s been an incident,” said Veitch-Olson.
The incident team is trying to branch out to offer various types of help including helping people with mental health problems.
“We’re going to be doing some education and awareness about mental health. The conditions, what are the symptoms, how to react, or who to contact in case we come across someone who may be suffering from a case or a situation,” Miranda said.
Watsonville PD is holding an orientation for people to join PIT on Saturday at the Civic Plaza building in Watsonville. Potential members have to be at least 18, be ok with walking up to a mile, be empathetic and subject to background checks.
