Santa Cruz offering trolley tours for Public Works Week
Monday marks the beginning of Public Works Week, a time dedicated to thanking those who keep our roads paved, our bridges built, and so much more. They also are responsible for all of our recycling and treatment of wastewater.
All this week, the city of Santa Cruz is offering free trolley tours through their waste water treatment facility and recycling center. Through Thursday, there will be two tours a day of each facility; a 90-minute tour of the recycling center where riders will learn how 40 tons of recyclable materials are sorted and processed each day, and a 60-minute tour of the water-treatment facility, where seven-million gallons of waste water is naturally processed and cleaned each day. Those at the water treatment facility love the tours because they’re proud of what they do.
“We have two missions, and they are public health and clean water, protect the environment. How can you not like that? So our work here is really important, that’s why we want the public to know that we have an award-winning facility here. We’ve been plant of the year before and this year we came in second, state-wide, so this is a plant to be proud of!” said City of Santa Cruz Wastewater System Manager Anne Hogan.
The tours that will go on through Thursday happen annually during Public Works Week in an effort to show the public where there water and recyclables go. Also this week, the city of Santa Cruz will be launching a bike-share program throughout the city.
