Monterey Bay Community Power hosts public forum

Clean electricity is coming to many Central Coast homes this summer.

Monterey Bay Community Power is bringing carbon-free electricity and starting July 1st, most homes will be automatically enrolled.

Three Central Coast counties have all joined together to bring clean energy to homes and businesses.

Aside from King City and Del Rey Oaks, cities across the Central Coast will get carbon-free electricity from locally controlled Monterey Bay Community Power.

“This is phase 2, we launched commercial, industrial and agricultural back in March,” said Marc Adato with Monterey Bay Community Power.

In July more than 230,000 residential customers will be enrolled, but the company says the clean energy won’t bring any changes to your service or the billing process.

“PG&E does all the transmission, the distribution, the customer service billing,” Adoto said, “They read the meters, they handle all the outages. The piece that gets pulled out from Monterey Bay Community Power is the electricity portion from that model.”

Still, they’re working to get the word out and answer any questions you might have.

“I don’t think the residential component of this pays near as much attention, as those large commercial sector customer,” Adato said.

What might get your attention though, is a possible drop in how much you pay.

“It won’t amount to a whole lot for the typical residential customer but it’s still some savings,” he said, “It will be aggregated throughout the year and then at the end of the year they’ll get the credit on their bill.”

They’re expecting to save about $46 million in just a year and a committee will decide how to give that money back to the community.
