High number of killer whales in the Monterey Bay
Marine biologists say the Central Coast is seeing a higher number of killer whales than usual this year.
Marine biologist Nancy Black says the killer whales go to where the food is and right now that is the Monterey Bay.
“There have been hundreds of dolphins, humpbacks and killer whales, so it’s really an abundant time right now. It’s a great time to go out, “said Marine Biologist Nancy Black with Monterey Bay Whale Watch.
The orcas are following the gray whales which gather around the deep canyon in the middle of the bay.
The gray whales also make an easy target because the killer whales can come up from underneath them.
Visitors who went out on the water Thursday say they saw a lot of humpback whales and dolphins.
