The Satanic Temple of Santa Cruz adopts Seabright State Beach

Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz will soon be overseen by The Satanic Temple-Santa Cruz chapter.

The group has adopted the beach through the ‘Save our Shores’ program. In order to adopt a beach through the program, the Satanic Temple will act as a caretaker for a year by holding monthly cleanups and removing debris and trash.

Save our Shores confirmed with KION the group has indeed adopted the beach, but declined to comment further.

The Satanic Temple-Santa Cruz chapter has taken to social media for the announcement saying, “Our orientation is June 4th, and we begin cleaning soon after. Monterey Bay is a marine sanctuary, and we are grateful for the opportunity to help create a cleaner, safer environment for wildlife and humans. Ave Satanas!”

According to their website, The Satanic Temple-Santa Cruz is “committed to fostering a Satanic community in the Santa Cruz area, promoting critical thinking, reason, and equality.”

The Chapter Heads of the group told KION they feel honored to have their organization selected to adopt the beach and they’re excited to play such a big role in taking care of it.

“People do often have negative reactions towards Satanism and we’re here to show that, being a good person, we’d like to demonstrate that being a good person doesn’t necessarily come from a Christian moral background, that any person of any belief system can potentially do good deeds and be a good person,” said Sadie Satanas, Chapter Head of Satanic Temple Santa Cruz.

“We are proud of our community and proud to be a really good part of it and we’re stoked to be doing it and feel really privileged to be doing it,” said Lana Navalia, Co-Chapter Head of Satanic Temple Santa Cruz.

Beachgoers told KION that no matter what you believe in, if you are volunteering your time and energy to keeping our beaches clean, you’re doing something right.

“I mean I don’t really care, what they call themselves, if they’re coming to make the area cleaner and maintain, and if they’re not pushing people out, it doesn’t really matter what they believe in,” said Jessica.

“As long as they’re keeping the beach clean and they’re doing what they can for the environment, why not,” said Wes.
