Update: 4 kids flown to hospital following Royal Oaks crash

UPDATE 5:40PM 04/25/18:

Several people including children hurt after a two-car crash in rural Monterey County.

April is distracted driving awareness month, and there’s no better example to use than an accident in Royal Oaks involving four children Wednesday afternoon.

Just before 12:30, an adult male driving an older model Chevy pickup truck was traveling south on Maher Road in Royal Oaks. According to CHP, the driver looked down for unknown reasons and crossed the double yellow lines, running head on into a northbound newer Honda Odessey carrying an adult female and her four children, all six years old and younger. The driver of the pickup truck suffered a broken leg, the mother and four children received minor injuries. Despite that, the children were still airlifted to the nearest pediatric hospital.

“Scratches, abrasions, you know, small lacerations, but in a traffic collisions, there are three collisions that occur. It’s the vehicle against the object, in this case it was the vehicle, the body hitting the inside of the vehicle, and then your organs hitting within your body. There may have been internal injuries that we don’t see here on scene, so for that matter what they do is just to err on the side of caution. They airlift them to the nearest hospital,” said CHP Officer Jessica Madueno.

Both parties involved were from the Royal Oaks area. The area of Maher Road near Little Hill Lane was closed off for about two hours by CHP and Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies.

Of course, you never want to see anyone get injured, but CHP officials say the fact that the worst injury we saw in this head-on collision was a broken leg is incredibly lucky. The CHP wants to remind all drivers that distracted driving can cost lives, even by glancing away from the road for less than a second.
