UPDATE: Watsonville shooting victim dies, suspect faces murder charge

A man shot in Watsonville Friday has died.

36-year-old Victor Lopez was shot around 11:38 a.m on Highway 129 and Industrial Road. Lopez was taken to Watsonville Community Hospital and later flown to an out of county trauma center.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said Lopez died of his injuries on Saturday.

The shooting suspect, 39-year-old Miguel Castaneda was arrested for attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. He’s booked into Santa Cruz County Jail with a bail of $750,000.

Castaneda’s charges will be amended to murder when he is arraigned on April 24.

UPDATE 4/20/18 9:22 PM: A Santa Cruz man is now in jail charged with attempted murder after a shooting in Watsonville.

According to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, 39-year-old Miguel Castaneda shot someone on Highway 129 and Industrial Road in an unincorporated area of Watsonville.

The victim is in critical condition at a county trauma center.

Castaneda facing attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon charges.

He’s in the Santa Cruz County jail on $750,000 bail.

A shooting suspect has been detained in Watsonville.

Sgt. Brian Cleveland told KION a man was shot near Riverside Drive and Industrial Road on Highway 129.

The shooting occurred sometime before 12 p.m. Friday. Watsonville Police officers arrived and detained the suspect.

A gun was found at the scene. No additional suspects are being sought at this time, Sgt. Cleveland said.

The victim was taken to Watsonville Community Hospital and later flown to a nearby trauma center. His condition is unknown at this time.

Sheriff’s Office Detectives are interviewing witnesses and the man who was detained.

Highway 129 will be closed for several hours while crime scene investigators process the scene.
