Law enforcement cracks down on UCSC 4/20 event

UPDATE 4/20/18 9:20PM While recreational marijuana is legal for the first time on 4/20, UCSC campus police say that doesn’t change campus policy.

Chief Nader Oweis says “although the recreational use of marijuana has been legalized, nothing has
really changed on the campus The public use or consumption of marijuana or
marijuana products is unlawful.”

But this hasn’t stopped thousands from coming to UCSC to celebrate the unofficial national pot day. Knowing this, campus police bring in extra staff for the day each year. “we have about 100 officers total, they’re from throughout the UC system and from highway patrol,” says Oweis.

California Highway Patrol set up a DUI checkpoint on campus and had extra patrols in the area. Their first DUI arrest of the morning was a man high on marijuana who was on his way to celebrate the unofficial 420 holiday when the California Highway Patrol pulled him over.

Ironically enough CHP Santa Cruz arrested the DUI suspect on High Street.

The driver admitted to smoking pot while driving to UC Santa Cruz to partake in the unsanctioned 420 activities.

The campus is a marijuana and smoke free zone. Being in possession or smoking can land you a 100-500 dollar fine.

They expect anywhere from 2,000-4,000 people.

As of this morning there have been at least two DUI arrests. The final numbers will be in tonight.

One person was taken out of Porter Meadow on a stretcher. They were reportedly intoxicated and fell. They were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
