Seaside Homeless Committee meets for the first time

The City of Seaside’s homeless committee met for the first time Thursday.

The new group hopes to bring more services to the area.

This committee only has until the end of June to figure out how to spend 30 thousand dollars.

Though it’s a big job, they say they’re ready to get to work.

“It’s the duty of those who [do have homes] to definitely look into the different options and different avenues in order to help,” said Dominique Jones, a committee member.

She and five others who live here have taken it upon themselves to help.

They took oaths Thursday night, kicking off the first City of Seaside homeless committee meeting.

“The fact that the City of Seaside is doing this, it just bodes so much about the goodwill, the good intentions of the city,” Natalia Molina, Seaside Homeless committee member said.

The city council gave this new committee 30 thousand dollars to spend by the end of the fiscal year in June and they’ve got some ideas.

“It may not be directly placing them into a home but maybe addressing some of those issues that can affect or what happens to how they get to where they are,” Jones said.

Jones, who will serve as the committee chair, hopes the changes they plan to make in Seaside will have a ripple effect across the Central Coast.

“If you get the viewpoint and the perspective of different people from different areas and the ways homeless affects their particular city sometimes those best practices can be applied elsewhere,” Jones said.
