Caltrans removing several trees posing threat to public on Hwy 1

Several Monterey Pine Trees posing a threat to the public are being removed by Caltrans.

Two 75-foot Monterey Pines were removed from Highway 1 near Spindrift Drive in the Carmel Highlands on Thursday. The trees had the common virus “pitch canker” and began leaning towards a near by home. Clatrans crews say they prioritize tree removal by the threat level to the public.

These trees in particular had homes on one side and power lines on the other so they could have caused major damage if the fell. “It can be very dangerous depending on the situation on where it falls, how it falls and what it falls on of course, and we’re doing it for the safety of the public and the homeowner,” says Caltrans Lead worker Victor Magpusal.

Homeowners near by tell KION they are thankful the trees are gone.

The work only caused drivers a 5-10 minute delay. Caltrans will also be out on Friday on the northbound State Route 1 off-ramp from Holman Highway for more tree removal from 9am-2pm. One lane will be closed.
