Car theft suspect reaches 100+ mph in San Benito County pursuit

A car theft suspect reached speeds of more than 100 mph while trying to get away from police in San Benito County.

According to the Hollister Police Department, the pursuit began around 1:30 p.m. Friday. The driver of a stolen silver Honda traveled at a high rate of speed near San Benito High School.

The high school released this statement : “The vehicle drove through the school crosswalk on Nash Road, prompting the Shelter in Place protocol.”

The Shelter in Place was lifted within a couple of minutes and school resumed as normal.

A Sgt. with the department said the suspect traveled onto northbound Highway 25 going well over 100 mph near Gilroy when Hollister Police canceled their pursuit.

The California Highway Patrol and surrounding agencies have been notified.
