CSUMB set to host Shark Research Panel Tuesday

Everything shark will be up for discussion tonight at California State University Monterey Bay. A big focus will be on the close encounters we’ve seen on the Central Coast. Because of course, we all want to know…is it safe to enter the water?

Just two months ago, in November, a man was bitten by a shark while spear fishing off the coast of Pebble Beach. And that’s not all, in July, this kayaker was way too close for comfort when a great white took a chunk out of his kayak. So, are encounters like these the new norm? That will be a focus at the panel discussion tonight.

“Are shark encounters increasing in numbers and does that mean there are more sharks? That is a reason why we are convening this panel. Are there more sharks or more go-pro cameras and drones flying around on the beach? These are all the questions we are going to ask,” said CSUMB Director of Institute for Applied Marine Ecology, James Lindholm.
