Salinas crew on lookout for drought-stricken trees in winter storm
State and local officials are concerned that wind and rain could bring down trees that have been stressed by years of drought.
The city’s urban forestry crew is in charge of caring for around 300-thousand trees around the Salinas. A big job for a crew of five or so. The good news though, Crew Supervisor Victor Baez said they have been preparing for this type of weather by trimming trees next to the street all year round.
“The majority of the time it’s just, you know, a defective limb that we didn’t catch or no one knew about, and it just falls off. But the winds will be a big factor on that part,” said Urban Forestry Crew Supervisor Victor Baez.
Baez said if you see a tree that appears to be dead or dying near the side of the road in Salinas to give them a call at the Public Works Maintenance Yard.
