Fatal auto-pedestrian crash in Santa Cruz

A 29-year-old Santa Cruz man is dead after being struck by a car in Santa Cruz late Friday night. Officers found the man lying on the road at the intersection of Highway 1 and River Street at around 10:28 p.m. The pedestrian was transported to a local trauma center with critical injuries, and died at the hospital.

The involved vehicle, a 2011 silver Mercedes sedan, remained on scene. Police say a preliminary investigation shows the driver had the right-of-way, driving with a green light Northbound on Highway 1 approaching River Street, while the pedestrian was crossing against a red light.

The driver, a 57-year-old man from San Jose, was not arrested or cited, and is cooperating with investigators.

Release of the pedestrian’s name is pending notification of his family.

The road re-opened at approximately 2:35 a.m. Saturday morning.
