CHP emphasizes driver preparedness with rain coming
It only took three days for it to happen; the Central Coast is seeing its first rain of 2018.
Not counting last winter, it seems like rain always surprises Central Coast drivers, and the California Highway Patrol wants to make sure you’re prepared, as the rain isn’t over just yet.
The rains have subsided for now, but earlier, drivers in the area saw a light but steady downpour. The California Highway Patrol says drivers get so spoiled by the fantastic weather we usually see on the Central Coast, they often forget to take extra caution when driving in the elements.
They’re reminding drivers to make sure their windshield wipers are in working order, both headlights are operational, and all illumination devices around the car are also working. They say there’s one factor that always causes the most accidents during rainy times.
“Speed, by far it’s speed. When it’s raining, you need to make sure you leave with ample time to get to your destination, you need to leave your space cushion should improve or it should be a lot further than normal,” said Salinas CHP Accident Investigation Review Officer Michael Orta.
Tire inflation and proper treading is also important for driving in wet weather. Without a good grip on the road, it’s easy to skid into other lanes or worse.
Lastly, as much as many of us may want to hit those big puddles to create a big splash, don’t do that. Driving over areas of standing water could be extremely dangerous to your car and others driving to the side of you or behind.
