Record breaking number of Blue Whales in the Monterey Bay

There are mass amounts of Blue and Humpback whales in the Monterey Bay for this time of year.

Experts said this is due to a strong ocean upwelling this summer. And this has led to an increase of krill which is food for these big whales.

Moss Landing Director Jim Harvey said, “These guys are a little too far offshore right to see from shore very much. Your best chance would be somewhere in the Monterey Peninsula. You mostly have to go get on a boat. So I suggest getting on a whale watch boat and going and seeing one.”

Harvey said it’s hard to know exactly how long these whales will stick around. But they estimate one or two weeks before the whales wipe out the food supply and then will move on.
