2nd Annual Fly Fishing Clinic held in Santa Cruz

A Fly Fishing Clinic held in Santa Cruz Saturday gave residents a chance to get hands-on experience with fly fishing.

Conservation groups, fisheries scientists and fly fishing experts helped educate participants about Central Coast fisheries and the important role of anglers as river stewards.

Michael Mcgannon with the Santa Cruz Fly Fisherman’s club says steelhead fishing used to be a popular sport in Santa Cruz, but that has changed in recent years due to pollution in the San Lorenzo River.

THe Coastal Watershed Council, who helped put on the event, says participants can put their new knowledge and skills to use with the opening of steelhead season on the San Lorenzo River on Dec 1.

Saturday’s clinic included hands on practical parts of fly tying, fly casting and learn about the gear they need to enjoy the sport.
