Tehama Sheriff’s Office: At least five killed in Northern California shooting spree

UPDATE: 11/14/2017 12:13 p.m. Authorities said a series of shootings in rural Northern California left five people dead, including the shooter, and that two children were among the wounded.

According to the CBS affiliate KHSL-TV, the shooting took place in the community of Rancho Tehama, about 15 miles southwest of Red Bluff, around 8:00 a.m.

Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said one child was shot at a school Tuesday and another was shot while riding in a pickup truck with a woman who was also wounded.

Johnston said the shooter was “randomly picking targets.” He said there were seven shooting scenes and that there may be more victims. At least 10 children and adults have been hospitalized

One witness said the gunman shot at a truck in front of him as he was dropping off his three kids at school.

Salvador Tello said Tuesday that he also saw a dead woman lying on a street about a quarter-mile from Rancho Tehama School. He said the woman’s husband was beside her and had been shot in the leg.

Tello said he was about three blocks from the school when bullets tore into the truck. He made his kids get down and slammed his vehicle into reverse.

Tello said the gun must have been large because the bullets made “big holes” in the truck carrying several men.

Investigators have recovered a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns.

A man said his roommate is among the victims in Northern California and that his neighbor was the gunman.

Brian Flint told the Record Searchlight newspaper in the city of Redding on Tuesday that his neighbor, whom he knows only as Kevin, also stole his truck.

He said he and his roommate told authorities that their neighbor was acting “crazy” and threatening them.

Flint said the suspect had been shooting “hundreds of rounds” from large magazines.

Governor Jerry Brown issued the following statement regarding the shooting in Tehama County.

“Anne and I are saddened to hear about today’s violence in Tehama County, which shockingly involved school children. We offer our condolences to the families who lost loved ones and unite with all Californians in grief.”

11/14/2017 11:31 a.m. Breaking news out of Tehama County in Northern California, officials now say at least five people are dead after a suspect opened fire in multiple locations, including near a school.

The shooting spree took place Tuesday sometime around 8 a.m. Two law enforcement officers shot and killed the suspect.

Officers recovered one assault rifle and two handguns.

A man said his roommate is among the victims in Northern California and that his neighbor was the gunman.

The investigators said that the shooting started at one location then moved near Tehama Elementary School.

At least seven children and adults have been hospitalized.

Enloe Medical Center spokeswoman Nicole Johansson said the hospital is treating four people Tuesday, including three minors.

She said one patient was flown by helicopter to the hospital in Chico, about 50 miles southeast of the shootings. Johansson provided no other information.

Separately, three people were being treated at a hospital in Redding, about 50 miles north of the shootings.

UPDATE: 11/14/2017 10:46 a.m. Authorities said three people have been killed in shootings at multiple locations in rural Northern California, and the shooter has been killed by law enforcement.

Students also were shot and wounded at an elementary school.

Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston tells a TV station in the city of Chico that officers are investigating at least five crime scenes in and around the school in Rancho Tehama Reserve, about 130 miles north of Sacramento.

Jeanine Quist, an administrative assistant with the Corning Union Elementary School District, said no one was killed at the school but a “number” of students were shot and wounded.

According to Enloe Medical center three people were transported by ground and one by helicopter.

They can confirm that three of them were children and one of them was an adult.

CBS Chico/Redding-Tehama County Sheriff deputies are at the scene of a reported shooting in the area of Rancho Tehama in Tehama County in Northern California.

Sheriff’s Investigators confirm that there are at least three deaths, including the suspected shooter.

Investigators from the Sheriff’s Department confirmed that multiple shots were fired and there are multiple victims.

The investigators said that the shooting started at one location then moved near Tehama Elementary School.

The school has been cleared and the children are in a safe location.

There are more than 100 law enforcement on scene, and more police personnel are on the way.
