Monterey looking at what parks would be a good fit for dogs

The City of Monterey wants to hear your thoughts on how to make City parks more pet friendly. One of the things that came out of an updated 2016 Parks and Rec Master Plan was that people want their dogs allowed in more neighborhood parks throughout Monterey. Right now, dogs are only allowed in four different areas, one of which is the dog park at lake El Estero. But, while the public may have a strong desire to make the city a more “dog friendly city,” the challenge is finding the right area to do it.

“Land is pretty tight in a lot of the neighborhoods, that it’s like if you want an area for a dog park they’re going to have to give up something. Whether it may be a basketball court or a soccer field, or a green grass area. And a lot of times those people don’t want to give up those areas. So what is the compromise? Probably to let dogs at the park but on a leash,” said Recreation and Community Services Manager, Cindy Vierra

That survey is available until November 3rd. After that, the results will be presented at the parks and rec meeting. Then in January, a recommendation will be given to council.

You can take the survey here.
