BIG SUR: Burglary suspect killed in high speed chase identified
Three suspected burglars led Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies on a high speed chase through Big Sur.
According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, three men, ages 18,19, and 26 allegedly broke into at least 10 cars in the Carmel area including one car at Carmel High School.
Around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, a deputy spotted the suspect’s Acura and chased it onto Highway 1 towards Big Sur. According to the California Highway Patrol, the chase exceeded speeds of 100 mph and the Sheriff’s Office truck could not keep up.
By the time the deputy caught up to the Acura it had crashed into a State Parks owned Ford F-250 truck near Palo Colorado Road. The Acura then struck a Ford Escape traveling southbound behind the Ford F-250.
The Acura split in two and caused one of the suspects to be ejected from the car. The 18-year-old suspect died at the scene. The F-250 traveled off the should and caught fire in a field.
The two other suspects and the State Parks driver 59-year-old Robin McManaman sustained major injuries and were flown to the hospital. The driver of the Ford Escape, 32-year-old Alana Warcken suffered minor injuries.
“The crashes of this nature, when they’re traveling at high rates of speed, the closure rates can cause violent collisions and that’s what we believe happened here,” said California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Orta.
According to State Parks official, John de Luca, the employee is still in the hospital.
CHP officer, Oscar Loza said, out of the three suspects the driver has not yet been determined.
Inside the Acura authorities found, money, foreign money, identification cards, credit cards all of which MCSO believe came from break-ins.
The Sheriff’s Office believes there could still be more burglary victims.
“Experience says there are probably more burglaries that we don’t know about yet that have not been reported so if somebody had a burglary please call the Sheriff’s Office,” said Commander John Thornburg with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office released the name of the dead suspect as 18-year-old Emel Shivers of Oakland.
The names of the two other suspects have not been released at this time. The Sheriff’s Office said the two suspects could face burglary charges.
CHP is conducting the collision investigation.
