Progress was made to state parks in Big Sur after a devastating winter.

According to the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce, at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, the Overlook Trail to McWay Falls is reopening. Certain campsites will remain closed until further notice. This week, Andrew Molera State Park opened nearly half a dozen trails: Bluff, Panorama, Ridge Loop, Bobcat and Creamery, which leads to Molera Beach.

The opening comes months after a wild winter devastated the area with washed out trails eroded roads and damaged campgrounds.

Dozens of people parked over at Andrew Molera, and walked about a mile and ended up at the beach.

“Once we got here, this expansive big beach and ocean, just gorgeous gorgeous scenery, just you know, what could be more beautiful than the ocean,” said Walnut Creek resident, Lonna Wolf.

The wolf family drove down from Walnut Creek and explored parts of Big Sur, which is still cut off from the north.

Bernie Wolf of Walnut Creek said, “There was not a lot of people and not a lot of traffic on the road. We would see the shuttle van going back and forth and we could see some of the construction on the bridge.”

California State Parks said they’ve made great strides to improve the recreational opportunities in the area and while many of the beloved trails are still closed, they encourage the folks to celebrate what is open.

“We know the beautiful views are what they’re known for. We just don’t have that on the East Coast so it was great to come out and see that,” said Evans.
