Hollister father, Gilroy athlete die in head on crash in South Sacramento
Two men, from two cities on the Central Coast, were killed in a crash in South Sacramento early Wednesday morning.
California Highway Patrol said Darren Chaytor, 31, of Hollister, was driving a 2007 Isuzu box truck on northbound Interstate 5 at dawn, when he crashed head on into a stopped semi truck just north of the Laguna Blvd. exit.
Officers said Chaytor and his passenger, Tyler Fhurong, 21, of Gilroy, weren’t wearing seatbelts and were killed instantly.
During the investigation, officers said there weren’t any skid marks found on the highway, implying the driver may have been distracted or drowsy.
CHP said traffic was stopped on the highway because of a previous crash and the semi was in the far right lane.
According to a GoFundMe page posted by a family member, Fhurong went to Christopher High School in Gilroy, where he played football and baseball.
According to a YouCaring page posted by family members, Chaytor was a husband and father to a baby girl.
