BANGKOK (AP) — Protests and violence have marked the one-year anniversary of the army’s seizure of power in Myanmar. Photos and video showed a “silent strike” emptied streets in the largest city of Yangon and other towns as people stayed home and businesses closed in opposition to army rule. Clashes and violence were reported as well, as the military government faces an ongoing uprising that some U.N. experts now characterize as a civil war. President Joe Biden called for the military to free ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and return Myanmar on a path to democracy.
