A 7-year-old Salinas boy drowned in Lake Shasta Saturday during a family vacation on a houseboat, according to authorities in Northern California.

The Shasta County Coroner’s Office has identified the boy as 7-year-old Julian Zamora of Salinas.

The family discovered the boy’s flip flops floating near Shasta Caverns and called police. Searchers found the child dead about 30 minutes later in 17 feet of water. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said the child was not wearing a life jacket and was not required by law to be wearing one.
