The Santa Cruz Fire Department is investigating a fire that sparked early Wednesday morning near an apartment complex.

Officials with the city’s fire department say it began around 1:11 a.m. in the 300 block of Trescony Street.

Firefighters saw a gas line on fire outside of the complex along with a fence, some vegetation and a portion of a structure.

The flames were quickly put out but firefighters battled hot spots for several hours.

One unit was destroyed due to a fire that started in the attic.

Five people were displaced but much of their personal property was saved.

No injuries were reported.

The building is currently unlivable and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
