Monterey receives state reimbursement for Soberanes fire
Last week, the City of Monterey received $377,000 from the California Office of Emergency Services (OES), for the Monterey Fire Department’s response to the Soberanes Fire.
Under the California Fire Assistance Agreement, the City of Monterey provides statewide mutual aid fire services. Monterey Fire deployed 21 times to various fires from July 1 and September 30, 2016.
“With the new fire season upon us, now is a great time to remind everyone to be vigilant when enjoying the spectacular wilderness activities the Monterey area has to offer,” said Monterey Fire Chief Panholzer. “Every individual must take responsibility.”
Officials say as of 2016, the Soberanes Fire was the most expensive wildfire in U.S. history. The fire resulted from an illegal campfire in Garrapata State Park. The fire burned 132,127 acres along the Big Sur coast. During the fire’s peak, over 5000 personnel were assigned to the blaze. In term of acres burned the Soberanes Fire is the 18th largest wildfire in California.
