A 61-year-old man was killed Saturday evening in a hit and run while crossing North Main Street in Salinas, according to Commander David Crabill with Salinas Police.

The victim was crossing the road just before 7 p.m. near the railroad tracks when he was hit. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died a short time later, Crabill said.

The driver, Ruben Martinez, 25, fled the scene and went to a nearby gas station on E. Alisal Street and Front Street where he allegedly switched seats with his passenger, Guadalupe Mosso Gonzalez, 26, according to Crabill.

A 12-year-old girl was also inside of the car.

Unbeknownst to the suspects, a witness had followed them to the gas station and called police. Officers were able to track down Martinez and Gonzalez within minutes on Monterey Street and arrested them.

Martinez and Gonzalez are now facing several different charges.
