Massive statue now open in San Francisco
If you get a chance to make your way up to the Bay Area be sure to stop in San Francisco to see the city’s tallest sculpture, “Venus.”
The new art piece is now open to the public at the center of a plaza at the four building Trinity Place apartment complex in Soma. “Venus” is just shy of the “Statue of Liberty’s” height.’ The sculpture stands at 92-feet tall with it’s stainless steel twists reflecting the bay sunlight.
Last May, CEO for Trinity Properties, Walter Schmidt told CBS affiliate KPIX, “It’s Venus, which is a modern interpretation of Venus de Milo.”
The concept of the Venus statue is ancient art meeting modern technology. Weighing more than 50 tons, Venus was shipped to America in 70 pieces by a team of Chinese artisans.
The hollow statue is actually larger on top. But at the bottom, the lower 20 feet has been filled with concrete and the whole thing is anchored six stories down in the parking garage.
The project has taken more than 10 years to complete. Now that the one acre plaza is open folks can stop by between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to check out the gardens, art pieces and now the spiral goddess.
