Fatal car crash shuts down Highway 101 near Gilroy

UPDATE: 5/15/17 8:46 a.m. – The CHP says two men were killed and woman seriously injured after their car rolled over and was struck by another car late Sunday night on Highway 101, north of Monterey Road in Gilroy.

According to the CHP accident report, the driver of a 2006 Nissan traveling southbound on 101 allowed his car to leave the roadway and enter the dirt median strip. He then over-corrected to the right, colliding with a hillside on the west side of the highway. The car overturned, creating a large dust cloud that reduced visibility on the road. A second car, a 2017 Honda, slowed as it entered the dust cloud, but struck the overturned Nissan, which was blocking the highway’s right southbound lane.

The driver and a passenger in the Nissan died from injuries suffered in the crash. Both men, whose names have not been released, were from Watsonville.

A third person in the Nissan, a 37-year-old Watsonville woman, was transported to the San Jose Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. A 4-year-old child, also a passenger in the Nissan, sustained minor injuries.

There was no immediate word on the condition of the driver of the Honda.
