Local moms take the day off for Mother’s Day with fancy brunch

The chefs at San Juan Oaks Golf Club prepared all week for their sold out Mother’s Day Brunch.

“We have over 600 reservations today for Mother’s Day Brunch,” said Scott Fuller, San Juan Oaks Golf Club General Manager. “We start taking reservations generally about a month ahead of time. We sell out in a couple of weeks usually.”

Chef Jeffrey Walker and his crew pulled out all the stops this Mother’s Day. They served up classic brunch items, seafood and meat carving stations, along with lots of other farm to fork cuisine.

“The boys always want to barbeque and the ladies always have to clean up,” said Linda Lico of Hollister. “So they decided that no this year we’re gonna go out and no one has to do the work.”

Sentiments echoed by other moms who said other than the great food and atmosphere at San Juan Oaks Golf Club, they came so they could take the day off.

“These kids woke up at 5:30 a.m. and I tapped my husband, it’s Mother’s Day it’s all you today,” said Leslie Galvan of Gilroy.

Some people are making it a priority to splurge on their mom. According to the National Retail Federation, Mother’s Day spending is expected to reach a record high. A little more than $23 billion dollars will be spent to shower mom with everything from jewelry to trips to her favorite restaurant.

“Apart of me feels guilty and the other part of me loves it,” said Lico. “I feel like I don’t want them spending money on me like that.”

People will also spend a lot of money on flowers and gifts of experience.
