Salinas man convicted of first-degree murder in stabbing death of his wife’s ex-husband

On Wednesday, a Salinas man, Alexander Winn, 46, was found guilty of murder in the first-degree for the stabbing death of David Derrington, 48, of Watsonville on February 21, 2016, according to the Monterey County District Attorney’s office.

In an attempt to oust his ex-wife, Traci Derrington-Winn and her husband, Alexander Winn, from his former home, Derrington started eviction proceedings against them, when Winn defaulted on an agreement to buy him out.

Winn and his former wife refused to leave the house and Derrington, newly emboldened with a court order, enlisted the help of the Monterey County Sheriff’s office to force the couple out.

On February 9, 2016, Winn and his wife were forcibly removed from the house. In the months leading up to the eviction and on the day of the eviction, Winn made several statements to witnesses who testified at trial that he was going to kill Derrington.

On February 21, 2016, Winn used a nine inch military-style knife, ironically originally belonging to Derrington and left in the house when Derrington moved out following the divorce in 2008, Winn inflicted twenty-two stab wounds, nine of which penetrated his lungs.

Winn will be sentenced on July 6 and faces 31 years to life in prison.
