No charges will be filed in Santa Cruz Main Beach death of Steven Lee
UPDATED 5/2/2017 2.35 p.m No charges will be laid in Main Beach, Santa Cruz death of Steven Lee, 52, following a review of evidence and reports.
This is according to The Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s office who determined there is not enough evidence to charge Kevin Callahan, 58, in connection with the death of Lee.
The investigation took into account the autopsy findings by the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Coroner’s office. Callahan has since been released from custody.
The Santa Cruz District Attorney’s office says during the investigation, witness accounts and evidence from the scene led investigators to believe that Lee had died as a result of an altercation that took place earlier that Saturday.
UPDATED 5/1/2017 1.15 p.m. Santa Cruz police have identified the man who was found dead at Main Beach on Sunday as Steven Lee, 52, also believed to be homeless.
Police are still talking with witnesses and the suspect to get more information on what happened although it is understood the two men knew each other.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office says an autopsy will be completed either Monday or Tuesday to determine exactly how Lee died.
UPDATED 04/30/2017 5:17 p.m.: An arrest was made in the homicide investigation of a transient man whose body was found near the volleyball courts in the Main Beach area of the Santa Cruz Boardwalk Sunday.
Officers said they arrested Kevin Callahan, 58, in connection to the homicide.
Callahan and the victim where involved in a physical altercation earlier that day, officers said.
Detectives said Callahan was found sleeping on the beach near where the fight took place. Detectives then booked Callahan, into the Santa Cruz County Jail.
The cause of death has not been determined at this time.

PREVIOUS STORY: The death of a transient man whose body was found near the volleyball courts in the Main Beach area of the Boardwalk on Sunday is being investigated as a homicide, police said.
Paramedics were called to the scene about 4:20 a.m. but the victim was pronounced dead, officers said.
Officers said witnesses told them the 52-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, had been involved in an altercation with another man earlier in that day.
Detectives are speaking to witnesses and a person of interest in the case.
A portion of Main Beach at the volleyball courts remained closed for a few hours.
The Santa Cruz County Coroner’s Office also responded to the homicide and is assisting with the investigation.
