Businesses helping start the conversation about foster care needs in Monterey County
May is National Foster Care Awareness Month. Each year hundreds of kids go through the foster system in Monterey County, and Community Liaison Mayra Guzman says the biggest thing is just getting the conversation started about how people can help. That’s the goal at businesses throughout Salinas and on the Peninsula. Whether it’s coffee sleeves, flyers on pizza boxes, or stickers on baked goods. Community human services wants to get the word out about how you can help. Guzman says there’s always a need for families, but if that’s not in the cards then there are other things you can do.
“If you’re willing to hold a meeting I can come out and talk about it. Additional to that if you want to make a donation for school supplies, clothing, and pajamas. We have older kids coming out of high school you can help with graduation gowns and prom,” said Community Liaison Mayra Guzman. Guzman says on an annual basis there is 300 to 400 kids in foster care just in Monterey County.
