The ShotSpotter detection system activated at 11:39 p.m., indicating three shots had been fired. By the time officers arrived on scene, nine more shots had been recorded, and police had received three phone calls reporting gunshots.
Officers found Elijah Gonzalez, 20, leaving the scene by car and followed him into the parking lot of an apartment complex. Gonzalez got out of the car when it was stopped at a dead end.
Police say Gonzalez refused to cooperate, and continued to resist even after officers used a Taser. When he was finally subdued, police found a loaded semi-automatic pistol under the driver’s seat.
Police recovered numerous shell casings, but found no evidence that any person, building or vehicle had been struck by bullets.
Gonzalez was booked into Monterey County Jail on several weapons charges. Police are investigating the case as a gang-related crime.
