Two hurt, one missing after Greenfield car crash

Two people are in the hospital and another is nowhere to be found after an alleged drunk driver drove into them while they were walking in Greenfield, according to California Highway Patrol.

According to police, the crash happened Saturday afternoon around 2 p.m. near Elm Avenue, west of Metz Road, when the driver, Nicanor Sanchez, failed to stop for the road closed signs and drove through a locked metal gate closure hitting the three pedestrians who were walking on a bridge. The victims then went flying into the Salinas River.

Two of the victims were able to fight the current of the river and grabbed onto some tree branches until rescue crews got to them, according to police.

Of the two rescued, one had minor injuries, the other suffered major injuries. The third victim was forced down the river and could not be found Saturday.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Department Dive Team will continue to the search on Sunday morning.

According to police, Sanchez was drunk and was arrested.
